Martin Abrams
leader, Lambeth Council

Cllr Martin Abrams is the first Green Party leader of the London Borough of Lambeth, elected in June 2026. He was first elected as a Labour councillor for Streatham St Leonard’s in 2022 and joined the Green Party in 2025 after being suspended by Lambeth Labour for supporting a ceasefire in Gaza and seeing the move as a natural continuation of his lifelong commitment to social, economic and environmental justice.
Martin brings extensive professional experience as a campaigner, trade unionist and community organiser. He is a committed, effective and hard-working councillor who has worked within the trade union movement, including as a national policy officer at the RMT Union and a casework support officer for the National Education Union.
Throughout his career, Martin has campaigned to shift wealth and power towards working-class people and communities. He believes strongly in the power of grassroots organising: bringing people together, building skills and knowledge, and giving communities the confidence and power to shape the decisions that affect their lives.
At the heart of Martin’s politics is a belief that lasting change is built from the ground up, creating the political and social power needed to deliver a fairer, greener and more beautiful world.
