Maeve Halligan
co-founder and president, Cambridge University Society of Women; postgraduate student, Eastern European literature; Living Freedom alumna

Maeve Halligan is a postgraduate student currently completing her MPhil in Eastern European literature, culture and political thought at the University of Cambridge. Her thesis explores the ‘culture of propaganda’ in both the Soviet Union and modern Russia, and will draw on her experience living in Russia, studying in Latvia and travelling extensively in Eastern Europe.

At Cambridge, Maeve co-founded and is the president of the Cambridge University Society of Women (CUSW), the only openly and proudly single-sex group for women at the university. CUSW aims to promote women’s sex-based rights and causes through guest speaker events, debates, discussions and campaigns. Although only months old, the society has a rapidly growing membership and widespread public support, featuring in many national publications.

Maeve is also a professional session musician and plays fiddle, keyboards and vocals for her band, The Hooligans. She speaks frequently at conferences and on panels about freedom of speech and expression, especially within the arts. Her writing has been featured in spiked.
