Emma Hilton

Emma Hilton is a biologist at the University of Manchester. She has a career specialty in developmental genetics and genetic disorders. In 2021, she authored a pioneering review challenging sports federations on their rules for sex categories. This review underpins policy positions across multiple international and national sports federations, and has been cited in sports medicine consensus statements, government position papers and in international courtrooms. Her latest work advocates for a return to sex screening to protect female athletes in all sports, from schoolchildren to the Olympics. Emma is interim chair of the board of trustees at Sex Matters.
