Eldur Smári Kristinsson
international liason, LGB International; free-speech advocate; gender-critical gay rights activist
Eldur Smári Kristinsson is an Icelandic writer, gender-critical gay-rights activist, free-speech advocate, and former political candidate.
Active in public debate since around 2015, he chaired Samtökin 22 (later LGB Samtökin / LGB Alliance Iceland), which prioritises same-sex attracted people and rejects gender ideology, medical transition of minors, and the erosion of sex-based rights. He now serves as international liaison for the Icelandic group and on the board of LGB International (founded 2025).
He argues that Iceland is undergoing a “religious reformation” driven by Queer Theory, which he says threatens children’s safeguarding, women’s rights, and LGB people.
In the November 2024 snap elections he was the lead candidate for Lýðræðisflokkurinn (Democratic Party) in the Northwest constituency and faced heavy media criticism for his opposition to youth gender medicine and related policies.
Recent legal issues:
- Ongoing criminal investigation for alleged hate speech over social-media posts criticising male “breastfeeding” and the removal of sex-based terms from legislation.
- Defamation case against RÚV and a journalist over 2024 election coverage: lost in Reykjavík District Court and appealed.
- Civil lawsuit filed in April 2026 by Ugla Stefanía Kristjönudóttir Jónsdóttir (Owl Fisher) over 2023 comments describing medical transition of minors as child abuse; hearings ongoing in 2026.
He frames these cases as attempts to suppress legitimate criticism and free speech.
