Baroness Ann Mallalieu KC
president, Countryside Alliance; Labour life peer; sheep farmer

Baroness Ann Mallalieu KC made history in 1967 as the first female president of the Cambridge Union Society. A distinguished legal professional, she practised as a criminal barrister from 1970 to 2014 and was appointed King’s Counsel in 1988.

She entered Parliament as a Labour life peer in 1991, serving as opposition spokesman on Home and Legal Affairs from 1992 to 1997. Parallel to her political career, she chaired the Suzy Lamplugh Trust (1996–2000).

Deeply connected to equestrian sports and the countryside, she served as trustee and president of The Horse Trust (1998–2005) and held leadership roles with the British Horseracing Board and Authority (2004–2009). She has served as president of the Countryside Alliance since 1998 and has been a hands-on sheep farmer on Exmoor since 2000.
