Alexandra Wilson

Dr Alexandra Wilson is an author, arts writer and academic. Her books on opera include The Puccini Problem, Opera in the Jazz Age, Puccini’s La bohème, and Someone Else’s Music: Opera and the British, which traces the British relationship with opera over the last century.

Wilson writes on a wide variety of cultural topics for publications including BBC Music Magazine, Opera, The Critic and Engelsberg Ideas. Her writing about music can also be found in programme books for major opera companies worldwide, and she can be heard regularly on BBC Radio 3 and 4. Wilson has held research positions at Worcester College and St Hilda’s College, Oxford, and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and taught at the Universities of Newcastle and Birmingham, the Open University, and Oxford Brookes University, where she was Professor of Music and Cultural History. She is currently a Senior Research Fellow at Jesus College Oxford and a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society.

Her latest book, Culture Vultures: When Activism Meets the Arts, was published in 2026 by Polity.
