musician and researcher; resident pianist, BFI Southbank; founder member, Frame Ensemble
Jonny is one of a small number of pianists specialising in improvising silent film accompaniments. He’s a resident pianist at BFI Southbank and performs improvised live-scores for silent film around the UK and internationally, as a soloist and as a founder member Frame Ensemble. Before he started improvising with film, Jonny worked in the arts for twenty years. He began as a pianist in West End musical theatre before joining the RSC as an assistant director and hopping from there to the National Theatre, Royal Opera, ENO and Opera North. He spent ten years leading arts festivals, including Queer Up North International Festival. Today, as well as performing, Jonny also researches silent film accompaniment, teaches improvisation and directs the biennial Yorkshire Silent Film Festival.
