director, Orms; writer and commentator on architecture
John McRae joined Orms in 1997 and is a trustee and director of the practice along with Oliver Richards, Richard Keating and Colin McColl.
John has experience working across workplace, education, residential and healthcare sectors. John focuses on creating architecture that is sensitive to the users’ individual and collective needs.
Over the last 10 years, John has developed a strong interest in creating environments that contribute to users’ wellbeing, in part through working with the charity Teenage Cancer Trust. With them, he and his colleagues developed a design blueprint for developments throughout the UK, including The Skypad Cardiff, which has won a number of prestigious awards. This approach has proved just as valid in workplace projects such as No1 New Oxford Street, Forum St Paul’s, 95 Wigmore Street, and the Fora co-working spaces. It has also translated into other sectors, such as the RIBA award winning Uppingham School Science Centre and St Giles Circus which is currently on site.
John is a member of the British Council for Offices. He has contributed to a number of industry conferences, writes articles and comments for journals including Design Exchange, On Office, Architecture Today and AJ and is currently co-vice chair of the RIBA North London Architects Group.
