commissioning editor, BBC Sounds; former head of audio, Guardian
Jason Phipps is a commissioning editor for podcasts within the BBC Sounds team. Before this he was head of audio at the Guardian from 2014 to 2018 and has worked in podcast production and commissioning for over a decade.
Key to Jason’s BBC Sounds role is to innovate and grow new voices by commissioning content specifically for younger audiences. Jason’s work involves finding stories and ideas that use the creative opportunities of the audio form we call podcasting. Recent commissions include: NB, a podcast about coming out as non-binary; Jacob Hawley On Drugs, a deep dive into British drug culture and No Country for Young Women, a look at life of young women of colour balancing their cultural identities. Other commissions in the pipeline include a ‘Blockbuster’ podcast drama, an ethical spin on a true-crime title, a ten-part investigative series from Irish indie Second Captains and a body positive and sustainable look at high street fashion.
