Debating Matters Championship: Dorset

Friday 9 November, 10:3020:00, Sherborne Girls School, Bradford Road, Sherborne, Dorset, DT9 3QNUK satellites

Debating matters because ideas matter. This is the premise of the Academy of Ideas Debating Matters championships for sixth form students which emphasises substance, not just style, and the importance of taking ideas seriously.

This year Battle of Ideas is working with Debating Matters partners and hosts Sherborne Girls School on this satellite event, the first ever Debating Matters Dorset Championship. Eight schools from Dorset and the surrounding area, including The Gryphon, The Burgate, Gillingham, Sherborne Boys and Sherborne Girls will battle it out for the crown of Debating Matters Dorset Champions as they tackle a range of difficult topics over the course of a rigorous day of debate. The debaters will be pushed to think beyond the headlines by a prestigious panel of adult judges who will put content over style to decide the winner.

Topics to be debated are Universal Basic Income, Artificial Intelligence, Historical Monuments and Social Egg Freezing

Louise Troup, Head of English at Sherborne Girls said of the Championship:
‘We are delighted to be hosting the Debating Matters Dorset Championship and to welcome students from across Dorset, in independent and state schools, together for debates that will be judged by leading figures in the media, law, commerce, academia and industry.’
