This session is part of 25 years of Novo: The Freiraum Congress, a day of debates covering politics, freedom and the future of society.

Prosperity is the foundation of modern freedom. Most of our wealth remains the result of industrial production. At the same time, scepticism towards industry and modern technology is growing. Nuclear power is being phased out, genetically modified crops are still not widely available and widely used pesticides have been banned. Modern technologies – including robotics, biotechnology and network technologies – are primarily viewed as risks. While in Germany the precautionary principle and ethical concerns inhibit innovation, new technologies are already on the starting blocks in other parts of the world. What are the reasons for the German fear of technology? What potential does technological progress hold?
