Tony Ridley is the Emeritus Professor of Transport Engineering in the Dept of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Imperial College and has been the Director of the University of London Centre for Transport Studies (ULCTS). He was Head of the Dept of Civil and Environmental Engineering 1997-99 and was Managing Director of the Board of Eurotunnel for two years. Prior to that he was on the Board of London Transport for eight years and was Chairman and Chief Executive of London Underground Ltd. He was the first Managing Director of the Hong Kong Mass Transit Railway Corporation 1975-1980 and was the first Director General of the Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Executive 1969-1975.

Tony holds a Doctorate in Transportation Engineering from the University of California, as well as Civil Engineering degrees from the University of Newcastle and Northwestern University. He attended the Senior Executive Program at Stanford Business School in 1980. He is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, as well as the Institution of Civil Engineers (of which he was President 1995-96) and the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (of which he was Chairman for several years of the Transport Policy Committee). He was International President of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) 1999-2001 and became President of the Commonwealth Engineers Council (CEC) in March 2000. He is a member of the Executive Council of the World Federation of Engineering Organizations. He has been Chairman of the Board for the Engineering Profession (BEP) of the Senate of the Engineering Council. He is a former President of the Light Rail Transit Association. He has been active in the International Union of Public Transport and is now an Honorary Member. He is President of the Association for Project Management (APM). In 1988 he was the first recipient of the Highways Award of the Institution of Highways and Transportation and in 2000 the first recipient of the Herbert Crow Award of the Worshipful Company of Carmen. In March 2002 he received the President’s Award of the Engineering Council. He is a former member of the Construction Industry Council. He is a Trustee, and a member of the Public Policy Committee, of the RAC Foundation for Motoring.
