Natalie Haynes is an award-winning comedienne who studied Classics at Cambridge. Her latest book, The Ancient Guide To Modern Life (Profile Books) explores events and characters from the past that are ‘sufficiently sparsely drawn for us to insert our own subtext’. So The Wire’s Stringer Bell is Oedipus; The Simpsons is a modern version of the work of Aristophanes. The question is, if we interpret to suit contemporary conditions, might we be in danger of missing the actual text?
