Dr Simon Foster

Simon Foster lives in North London and is currently working as a science teacher. Simon also talks on a variety of subjects such as climate change, astronomy and astronautics, helping audiences of all ages to understand how science impacts upon their daily lives.

Simon studied Physics with Space science at the University of Southampton and stayed on to undertake a PhD in Solar-terrestrial Physics. Simon developed models and reconstructions of solar irradiance to help climatologists explain how the Sun has influenced the climate in the past so that they can better explain and understand current changes in the Earth’s climate. Simons research was included in the IPCC 4th assessment report on the scientific basis of climate change.

After completing his studies Simon moved back to London and took a post at Imperial College as an INSPIRE research associate. Through this role Simon acted as a science teacher in two inner-city London schools, as well as undertaking research in the Space and Atmospheric Physics (SPAT) group, again investigating solar variability and climate change.

In May 2009 Simon took part in NESTA FameLab, a national competition aiming to discover the next generation of science communicators. Simon won the London heat and came third in the National final. As NESTA FameLab 2009 runner-up Simon won the chance to present his own 3-Minute Wonder on Channel 4.

"It alerts me to new areas of debate, and gives thought-provoking new angles on topics I thought I already knew well. Altogether it's a wonderful intellectual tonic, which cheers up the dog days of November."
