Ion Martea

Ion Martea is an award-wining author writing in English and Romanian. His literary debut was awarded the Prima Verba Award and the International Creative Writing contest. Since then, he has published three books of poetry Only And… (Chişinău: Lyceum, 1998), Flight of a Babe (Chişinău: Ruxanda, 1999), Anthem to a Sinless Man (Chişinău: Pontos, 2000) and the novel Primordial Sin (Chişinău: Pontos, 2002) in Moldova. Anthem to a Sinless Man was named “the first book of acrostics in Romanian literature” by the celebrated poet Grigore Vieru, which also features a wide range of strict poetry styles, from roundel to ghazal to haiku. He has edited three poetry anthologies and has translated English, French and Russian poetry into Romanian, and Romanian poetry in English.

He is an LSE graduate in Philosophy and Economics, with an interest in Philosophy of Film, specifically on the issues of representation of reality and identity construction. His Essential Films series on Culture Wars (where he is also a commissioning editor for film) aims at constructing a cinematic canon that is driven by conceptual analysis of the art form versus the more established entertainment criticism widely applicable to individual films.

He is currently in the process of finishing his first novel in English.

"Participating in the Battle was a little like entering a Bombay train at rush hour - it's a plunge into a swirl of wildly differing notions of how people should arrange themselves in a really tight situation. When you eventually emerge, you find that you're in a different place from where you started - and that you've been thoroughly energised from the journey. I can't wait to take the trip again next year."
